There was a post in the Operational Excellence Group that I own on LinkedIn. The post was about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Lean Six Sigma program and the benefits that were realized. The poster was rather excited that the program had saved NASA $1.3 million. To the poster’s credit, and something I appreciated a great deal, he shared the source of the information. The presentation is entitled “NASA Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Program“, created in 2012, and it can be found on the NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS). On page 44 of the report, I found the summary of benefits realized by the program which included the following bullets; · LSS is being implemented by all centers to focus on cost, quality, schedule, and consistency · NASA trained over 1000 executives and 1500 technical personnel in LSS · And the summary specifically noted that NASA’s Return on Investment (ROI) and Cost avoidance was $1.3 million and 670 thousand labor hours – realized over the past four (4) years of the program. Reading this got me pondering. The benefits just didn’t seem very significant to me and I decided to dig deeper into the presentation. By Joseph Paris |

Benchmark your Operational Excellence Program |
They say that “up to 70% of Operational Excellence and Continuous improvement programs fail.” Don’t be one of them. Be the exception, not the rule. “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” To help you, your program, and your company to be successful, XONITEK has created a Program Architecting Whitepaper where you will find the best practices for the planning stage of an OpEx/CI program. Even if you already have a program, you can use it as a benchmark to see how your efforts compare. Click below to receive a copy of our 20+ page Best-Practices Program Architecting Whitepaper. |
Whether political turbulence, economic challenges, or biological threats, we live in a world that is increasingly less predictable and where volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) is the new norm. This has revealed vulnerabilities in the traditional business models and the manner in which organizations operate. Doing business as usual is no longer a viable strategy because there is no longer a “usual” upon which to rely. And yet every day, manufacturing businesses come closer and closer to operating at the speed of thought as organizations compress time by having higher quality information available more quickly through the relentless pursuit of eliminating friction from the processes and the binding of our organizations horizontally through the implementation of technology. This, in turn, enables business leaders to make informed decisions faster. By Ofra Kalechstain |

Holiday Wishes As we complete another circuit around the sun, we find ourselves reflective of the year’s hard-fought battles won and lost, of loves arrived and departed, and of our professional successes and disappointments. With rebuilding spirit and energy, we look with great anticipation to what lay before us in the coming year. And, most importantly, we look to reconnect over the next few weeks with our families and friends. After all, we do what we do professionally – not for love of treasure, or stature, or other such hubris – but to leave an indelible and positive mark on this Earth and on all whom we touch and who are a part of our lives. It has been a great pleasure to be a part of your life’s journey. I am very grateful for your time, consideration, and support – and hope that I have been a benefit to you somehow. So, as the Irish cheer goes; “May the best of your 2020 be the worst of your 2021.” Wishing you and yours a Joyous Holiday Season. ~ Joseph Paris |

We start our conversation by discussing the impact on manufacturing from Industry 4.0. And while many applications have been developed for the largest companies in the world, there is a void for affordable and easy to use applications for the middle-market; and it is in this space where the opportunities abound. And addressing the SME needs for a Management Execution System (MES) is where Matics can be of dramatic benefit. |
JP and guest co-host Don share the “myth” of border crossings during COVID. We read about all the rules associated with travel. But where the expectation set is that of stringent border controls, paperwork validation, and health-checks, the reality has been quite exactly the opposite; with there being no observable differences between travel pre-COVID and during (so long as you have the proper passport and paperwork). |
I would find it very hard to believe that any person who has achieved success without having at least one mentor along their journey – someone who was instrumental and influential in the life journey of the person being mentored (the mentee). But what is mentorship? To me, mentorship is a semi-formal relationship between someone who has wisdom (knowledge plus experience) and is willing to share that wisdom with another (the mentor) and a person who seeks wisdom and insights to fill gaps in their experience to accelerate their journey. A healthy mentoring relationship will be one where there is no expectation that the advice offered by the mentor will be heeded by the mentee, only that there is an openness to share and to consider. But do (or should) the mentor and mentee know mentorship is happening? |

Need Interim Talent? Get Your “SEAL Team” here. |
Sometimes we get caught because of an unplanned separation of an employee who was performing a key role in the company or project. Sometimes we have a short-term need for an experienced specialist to help push through a deliverable. But time is the enemy. This is not a situation where you can take the time to recruit. The need is now, and help is available. |
