An Internet with Chinese Characteristics
The Chinese internet is developing at an impressive pace. Already it is the world’s largest online population, with over 60% of the country are not even online yet. As this population grows, so does the number of characteristics of the Chinese internet that make its uniquely distinctive from that of the Western world. This seems to throw its support behind the argument that the global network of the internet does not primarily function to create uniformity. Rather, this global network is heavily influenced by local forces. But what implications does this have for the future of the Chinese internet? What would this future internet look like?
