Technology Monitor: Pipe Dreams
Pipe dreams: in the process of ushering water from its source to its final destination, up to a whopping 30% can be (and often is) lost due to leaks. This translates into a staggering $14 billion a year financial loss, according to the World Bank. So, how does one go about finding these leaks, when leaks of any variety are generally difficult to spot, let alone those situated underground? According to Amir Peleg, founder of a firm by the name of TaKaDu based near Tel Aviv, the key to solving this problem lies not with information, but rather, with analysis. TaKaDu’s engineers took the initiative to develop a monitoring system referred to as a “statistical anomaly detection engine”. This device serves to identify potentially vital information within data that might otherwise be missed. Based on the results so far, the engine seems to work. And countries around the world are starting to pay attention.
