Music in Commercials: Loony Tunes
These days it appears advertisers may be losing the plot a little, as suggested by their choice of loony tunes, or questionable songs, chosen as backing tracks to big budget adverts. Consider this year’s Christmas advert for John Lewis, a British department store. The store opted for a version of The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” in a bid to promote Christmas gifts. Were they aware of the somewhat raunchy underlying message in the chosen tune? Not only is this entirely possible, it’s likely. But why would an advertising agency event allow this? What’s in it for them?
