The Mystery of the Chinese Consumer

Analysts have indicated that China may well become the second-largest consumer market in the world by 2015 (preceded by only America). Already itā€™s noticeable that Western firms are pouring into the country. Most recently, Nestle has confirmed that it is in negotiations with Chinese confectionery and baked goods company Hsu Fu Chi, to discuss a potential buy-in. Will the Chinese government allow NestlĆ© to buy Hsu Fu Chi? Economists have labeled both the option of entering AND avoiding the market as high risk. Which leaves Nestle, and other manufacturers with global ambitions, in a bit of a tough spot.
