Internet Freedom: Free to Choose
The recent arrest of a Google Senior Executive based in Brazil – for refusing to remove videos from YouTube – has surprising helped the company to restore its image as a defender of free speech. However, only 2 weeks earlier, Google had jeopardized this image by blocking internet users in eight countries from watching a film preview that had infuriated Muslims and been banned in the majority of these states. This incident has initiated crucial debates with regard to internet freedom and how internet companies should manage public debate, as well as how firms based in countries that value free speech should react to states that want to censor it.
