Additive Manufacturing: Print Me a Jet Engine
GE Aviation, part of the world’s largest manufacturing group, has recently bought out a small, privately owned company by the name of Morrise Technologies. A firm specializing in precision-engineering, Morrise Technologies employs roughly 130 staff and has made significant financial investments in 3D printing equipment. It has been reported that GE considers this move an investment in an important new manufacturing technology. This technology is expected to be put to use in manufacturing various parts of a jet engine and the like. Some have stressed that 3D printing may turn many of the economics of production on its head. Indeed, this development goes a long way in support of the claim that product development will partner increasingly tightly with manufacturing innovation.
