Difference Engine: End of the Electric Car?
We’ve come a long way in the last few years. From petroleum fueled cars we moved on to developing the electric car. Then we set out to experiment with electric cars featuring hydrogen-fueled cells. For a while, these seem to have done fairly well. However, in testing (around the Los Angeles area), a number of problems with such a model have become obvious. At the moment, these cars need to get to one of only five available re-fueling stations currently accessible to the public. The plant and equipment required to produce, distribute and store hydrogen are also extremely costly. Now, many are suggesting that liquid air, or more specifically liquid nitrogen, may be the solution. But what does this mean for the new generation of hydrogen fuel-cell cars?
