Towards the end of poverty

The Economist reports on the world’s next imminent step forward – the continued alleviation of poverty. Statistics show that nearly 1 billion people have been taken out of extreme poverty in 20 years, so it’s not too far-fetched to assume the world can well continue this trend. Some 5 decades after Harry Truman expressed his concern over more than half the people in the world living in conditions approaching misery – the world has come a long way in fighting this problem. Although it has taken longer than Truman hoped, the world’s extraordinary progress in lifting people out of extreme poverty is unmistakable. Now the challenge remains to duplicate this progress, and keep it up…
