Why doesn’t France have a Mittelstand?

First off, a definition is due here. What is a Mittelstand? In short, it is an expression of a state of mind and a specific attitude. As per the Economist, The Mittelstand has become an ambition in the face of the euro crisis eating away at the confidence and success of France’s big national champions. And, emulating Germany’s medium-sized, mostly family-owned businesses is seen as the proper way to boost French growth, jobs and exports. The french look up to Germany for having prospered in specialized markets and earning good margins – so they are seeking to emulate them.
