Plasmodium Vivax: The Other Malaria
Think you knew the basics regarding Malaria? Think again. In fact, many are completely unaware that the disease is far more widespread and can be significantly more subtle than most were ever aware. The infamous disease, in fact, exists in several variations, two of which are notably widespread. These two are caused by related parasites, and both are spread via mosquitoes. However, these two diseases are by no means identical. The lesser know disease, Vivax, may not kill its victims as quickly as the better-known falciparum virus. However, it is known for its debilitating effects. Vivax can thrive in temperate climates and according to Ric Price, of Oxford University, as many as 390m people may suffer the effects of Vivax every year. Yet how much do we really know about this virus? And what are we doing about it?
