3D printing scales up

The Economist reports on the hype around 3D printing and its rapid integration with mainstream manufacturing. 3D printers make things by building them up, a layer at a time, from a particular material, rather than removing it by cutting, drilling or machining – which is why the process is also called additive manufacturing. Even so, additive manufacturing is not about to replace mass manufacturing entirely. Even though the technology is improving, the finish and durability of some printed items can still fall short…
