Italy’s Yogurt is also Strategic

If you thought that Italy’s seemingly unassuming yogurt industry was just that, think again. French dairy group Lactalis have historically set their sights on Italian owned company Parmalat. A strategic, successful bid for a greater percentage of the Italian-owned company placed the French stakeholders too uncomfortably close to the company takeover threshold for the Italians. However, with the French strategically pushing the buy-in envelope of Italy’s dairy industry, it’s worth noting that France shoo-ed Pepsi Co away from buying into French dairy group Danone in the past. National assets have taken many shapes and forms in the past, but this calcium-rich breakfast favourite has to be one for the books.
