Let there be two Fiats

Always one for surprises, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both the Fiat Group and Chrysler announced that he would be creating a combined entity between Fiat Auto and Chrysler. He also went on to reveal to everyone’s amazement, that Chrysler had made an operating profit of $143m in the first quarter and that net debt had fallen from $8 billion in November to $3.8 billion. Despite this week’s good news, some scepticism is still warranted. Mr Marchionne’s target of gaining a 14% share of the brutally competitive American market by 2014, compared with today’s 9%, is extremely optimistic.
